For English 201–Due Wednesday–Watch the following video.  Take notes and pause the film when you hear something that interests you or that in some way causes you to say “hhhhmmmm”.  From your notes take at least three points of interest and explain precisely what the item of interest is and what about it makes you pause.  What did it make you think?  Did it make you feel some way?  Do you see a connection between something in your life or in the news?  You need to respond to three points.  Please proofread for spelling, capitalization and punctuation.  Due Wednesday.

You will write a response to “Cathy Queen of Cats” or “Our Good Day.”  It must look like this to start:

 

In Sandra Cisneros’ House on Mango Street, the purpose of the vignette, (you choose) “Cathy Queen of Cats” is to show ___________________________.   (Now explain how you know.)  Use evidence from the text.  

Example:

In Sandra Cisneros’ House on Mango Street, the purpose of the vignette “Cathy Queen of Cats” is to show how some members of society, who aren’t so special themselves, judge others based on race and class.  Cathy, the cat lady, lives in a house full of cats and thinks she’s better than everyone else in the neighborhood, especially the new “bad” people moving in.  She isn’t able to keep friends because she’s so judgmental.  And she uses a reference to a distant relative in France to make her feel better than other people because she has nothing else to make her feel good about herself.  (add as much as you like!)

Choose one golden line from 3 of the vignettes you’ve read so far.   A golden line is one line that stands out to you as significant.  It moved you in some way.  Type the line precisely as it appears in your book.  Place it within quotation marks, and add the page number at the end of the line.  “It should look like this.” (1)    For each golden line, write a short response that answers the following.  Write it in paragraph form.  Why does that line stand out to you? Does it remind you of something in your own experience?  Does it affect you visually?  Can you feel a specific emotion when you read it? You have four responses to write in all.  Once you finish, copy your work, then click “submit”.  Your homework will be found on the Moodle cite tomorrow by midnight.  The due date will be posted on Moodle.  Be sure to check Moodle each day between now and next class to form a habit of checking into your online accounts.

Think about the Umoja and Adelante concepts of  1) Ethic of Love;  2) Recognizing Diaspora, and; 3) Power of Language.   

Choose one of these concepts and apply it to your own experience.  How does it fit into your education?  If it doesn’t how could it?  Write as much as you like.  Copy your work before you “submit” or you may lose it.

Type a reader response to the article.  What lines stand out to you and why.  Include at least three quotes and analyze why they struck a chord with you as a reader.  Did the words remind you of another situation in real life?  What about something you’ve already read?  Is it significant that Dawson is Latina?  Why or why not?  Remember to copy your work so you don’t lose it.

View the video in the middle of the article.  Trump gets shaken by a pouncing spectator.

 

Then, type and submit  a three to four paragraph response to the article and video.  What is your overall reaction?  What opinion do you form about this Presidential race so far?

Cite specific phrases  from the article to support your reaction.  Place your quoted phrases within quotation marks.  Remember, you must provide evidence once you make that assertion.  For instance:

Example:  The Trump rallies are out of control.  Trump’s fans and protestors, who appear way past the fighting stage, get more fired up when he yells, “Get ’em out.”  …

Do you see how I added descriptive information in the middle of that second sentence?  Do a little composing yourself.  Add something descriptive (and true).  Those of you who’ve been out of class, absent, you’ll need to catch up with the sentence composing exercises.  Pick up in class.
