Hurricane Katrina

What should have been the government response to Hurricane Katrina?  Use what you have read about the Green Family, heard in “Minority Report” and seen in the rooftop photo to explain what happened in New Orleans during and immediately after Hurricane Katrina. (proofread and copy before posting).

The Government should have paid residence to pick up debris and rubble as a way to sort of giving them a head start on rebuilding their lives. High ranking officials should have made their presence known at the site to bring resourceful attention to what was going on. floodwalls should have been reinforced to give residents more time on the evacuation. A bus system and neighborhood carpools should have been in order to help evacuate children and elderly people from poverty. The local mall should have been made to allow people to evacuate to the roof.

The Government should have had an evacuation and rescue plan ready to assist the victims of the hurricane. Before the storm came in the people that were at home knew that the storm had formed, however, did not seem to have an escape plan ready in case the storm came their way. When the flood water began to rise a mass panic ensued and people weren’t sure of how they were going to survive if help didn’t arrive in time. Numbers and Numbers of people hadn’t even prepared their homes in case floodwater levels increased. The Government should have begun a program that helps people to be prepared in case a storm strike.

A lot of families didn’t have any lifeboat or anything to help them in case the flood came their way. Hurricane Katrina tore families apart and numerous amounts of people wished that the Government would have given them prior notice about how severe that storm could have become. Louisiana being a coastal state should have had the latest storm tracking technologies avaliable. The Governments response after the hurricane should have been like the way the neighbors responded they should have been out there with lifeboats picking up people and delivering them to safety. After the storm had passed state officials should have created a workforce of picking up debris and collecting a body count as a way to sort of giving people a head start on recreating their lives.

The government should have first responded when they found the levees were not high nor strong enough to withstand the hurricane’s force. In addition, the government should have responded as soon as they could. According to the Constitution, the government, both federal and state are supposed to help its citizens in the state of disaster. Ample tax and foreign aid is dedicated to help the U.S. and its citizens in time of need. There is no way people should have been sitting on roofs, or in the Green’s family case jumping from roof to roof, without a hint of local or federal help. Interestingly enough, there were helicopters around to capture the moments but where were the helicopters to pick up the citizens. As best said by Jay-Z in “Minority Report”, he says, “Baby needed food and you stuck on the roof/Helicopter swooped down just to get a scoop/Through his telescopic lens but he didn’t scoop you” (4.24-26). In conclusion, it was inexcusable for the government to disregard its citizens in the midst of a natural disaster.

I think the government should have made it their priority to help those who couldn’t help themselves. Im not going to give them too much credit like they’ve ever been helpful in these kinds of situations but they could have provided the people things to at least survive and sustain themselves such as life jackets, established places where people could go if they needed to, food, water, water rafts. Basically all things the people were left to do on their own. which is scandalous because how many people are hurricane experts? I don’t know whose responsibility it is, but the Levees should’ve been inspected. Of what use are they if they can’t survive bad weather conditions? moral of the story is negligence and greed. Poor people are always abandoned in any catastrophe, even poor white people. The green family was devastated by Hurricane Katrina, from loss of life, to being displaced and living in a cemetery for 3 days, and living through the traumatic experience of having to search for their loved one’s remains.

The Governments should’ve already had a plan because they knew the hurricane was coming and should’ve started evacuating people on their own because there are most likely empty buses that could’ve took people out of state. From the tragic reading of the Green family they were stuck in their one story house until they were forced to kick out their roof just to get to “safety”. Looking at all the evidence you can see how little the government does to help American citizens. In Minority Report Jay-Z even recognizes that the government is no help and says that our own government/president doesn’t care about African Americans.

People injured, starving, and in desperate need are scattered everywhere in New Orleans shouting for help with a look but no response. They are told by the choppers that they’ll be back to get them out of the poor conditions and take them to a safe zone, but most of the people don’t have much time left in them. It’s a calamity that our nation ignores, and they seem to be more concerned with the property rather then the people. The government always advertising what they a do for the people, but when push comes to shove they aren’t there when the people really need them. Jay Z in his Minority Report song said in a verse, “ No one says the federal government is doing a good job” and that right there just shows us that we hear your outcry’s for help even though the government plays dumb like they didn’t.

The governments overall response to Hurricane Katrina should have been more helpful and more considerate. They should’ve took the right procedures to ensure the safety of everyone in an equal manner. For example, if news reporters and photographers have enough time and power to fly helicopters during a natural disaster to capture photos and videos for the media, then they were more than capable to swoop down in those same helicopters, and pick up those who were barely surviving. During Hurricane Katrina there were many people of minority, or low-income, stranded on rooftops and cars begging for help. In my opinion, it was the governments job to do whatever was possible to help those who couldn’t help themselves but they failed. It seemed as if they didn’t even try, they said things like “buses are on the way to take those people from New Orleans to Houston” (Minority Report,Line 72). They lied. Additionally, after reading about the Green family, it left me in distraught to read that Mr. Green lost people close to him in the hurricane, and that their was no help from the government. “The raging waters stripped off some of their clothes and shredded their floating wooden house…”

The government should of been more responsible about whats been happening, it’s like they don’t care at all. Why fly by and take pictures? But don’t stop and rescue those that were in desperate need of help. It’s almost like the government is selfish and doesn’t care at all to do anything about the situation more actions should’ve been done. When I had read about the green family the government didn’t do anything at all. You had people that were struck in the hurricane helping each other out, and looking out for one another. They had a lot of resources on how to rescue those people. The government failed us and we supposed to rely on them and they supposed to be prepare especially when dangerous things like that happens.

I would have like to see you add more details about the Green Family. They share first-hand accounts with the reader and their voices are vital to understanding what happened during the Hurricane Katrina’s aftermath. Who are the “people” you write about? Go more deeply into the story. Give me a few “For example” sentences. And

What should of been the government responsibilities is that government could a least make sure everybody got to the next state over and had camp ready for them to sleep in and a proper care. Like the rooftop “Minority Report” (Helicopters doing fly-bys to take a couple of shots, couple of portraits then ignored ’em) which is a great of example that was basically happening in the picture. Another response they should a least tried there best to evacuate the city/state.

The government did not take the proper precautions they needed to take to help the black people in New Orleans. In the minority report jay z explains that they government is lying to the people in the media and the news. People were being left for dead with no water and no shelter. The picture that was shown in class shows that people were forced on the rooftops of building they had no water and wee pleading for help and actually ran out of ink to write that they needed help. People took bird eye view

The government should have had a well trained emergency response, due to the picture of the Green family, I see that the rescue team are not proactive. There was communication breakdown, that is why some people were sleeping on the floor, they must have waved the flag to get the attention of the helicopter. Furthermore, the food supplies wasn’t getting to the people, that is why from the minority report, some people had to loot, to feed their families.

The government should have had a well trained emergency response team, because due to the picture of the Green family on the roof to, It seems the rescue teams are not proactive.
Furthermore, from the account of Robert Green story, the state recovery operation was over, yet hundreds of families who expected their deceased family member to be rescue, waited and nothing was done about it,Robert had also told the police members of the national Guard, red cross workers and federal emergency workers, yet no effort was made to rescue his mother and his daughter.
For example, the government should have had a robust communication system. also, Robert Green stated, that he asked where he could find information about Katrina’s dead, all he found was confusion everywhere, delay and wrong information. FEMA couldn’t be reached for several days no information because the FEMA recording would always say were too busy.

The government should’ve did a headcount on how many survivors there were and find a solution to help the people that was in need. Robert Green helped couple people get out of the storm while his family also needed assistants during the disaster. In the minority report, Jay z discuss about how the chief the just flew by without helping anybody, he just watched them.” I just put my monies in the hands os the same people that left my people stranded nothin’ but a bandit.” Jay-z talks about how he pay taxes to the government but they still leave his people to shame.

August 29, 2005 Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. It hit them hard. Houses were being torn down, shops lotted, people dying, and survival was on everyone’s mind. The government did all they can, but it was not enough. The governemt tried to rescue all the folks stranded, but it seem like they wanted was to look good for national television. Citziens of New Orleans had to choices, one was to evacute and if you. didn’t have a way to leave you were left people. The other choice was to survival at all cost and wait for help. Celebs were handing in millions of dollars and still didn’t have supplies to get kids, pets, eldely, and even folks in prison. Buses took forever to come and transport people. It got worse to even more worse then it was.

Survival was the only thought going on through peoples mind. The government did all they could really do but, it was not enough. The government tried to rescue all the families and stranded people on roofs, and other places they were trapped in , but it seem as if they just wanted to look like heroes on national television. Citizens of New Orleans had to choice but survive at all cost, wait for help if it ever came. Celebs were donating funds but like Jay-Z said ” it was only a band-aid.” Families were being separated, babies passed away, grandparents were dying on rooftops from starvation and supplies and from foundations did not make a change to their city. The government needed their focused on the people, and not on a war. This event was a national tragedy.

Based on my analyzation of “Minority Report” and the rooftop photo; the government should have prioritized all of the citizens equally. Instead of taking pictures of people in desperate need of assistance. They should have worked on evacuation and care of citizens. Instead, the government was worried about their war efforts.

The Government response during Hurricane Katrina should have been to immediately send their rescue team to help the people just like they did in 9/11 and bad earth quakes in California. The Federal Government seems to not want to help their territories during disasters. I personally think it has something to do with the people being colored that need help. For example in the song Minority Report Line 76 Kanye West says “George Bush doesn’t care about black people”

As citizens we pay taxes for situations like these. To help our fellow citizens in times of need. War should be put on pause when a part of the nation you’re “protecting” is in shambles. One of the lyrics in Minority Report state that even after 5 days there was no sign of rescue or assistance from our government. Hundreds and thousands of families probably shared a similar story to the Green’s, having to search through flood water to their family members from a flood that government illy prepared them for. No relief stations or squads were set into place leaving families like the Greens stranded on rooftops were they faced death from multiple angles and not just the water.

The government response should have been just like they have been doing in wars in the past such as the Iraq War. In Jay Z’s song he says that it should have been like Baghdad in a sense that supplies were dropped to those who were fighting in need. The government should have dropped food, water, and medical supplies to those who could not help themselves because of their social status. Obviously in the rooftop photo it shows that these people stuck looking for help and at the same time trying to avoid the natural disaster.

The government’s response to Hurricane Katrina should have been more active in helping the citizens and not waiting till last minute to step in. In Minority Report the money that was being donated was not making it to the victims, they struggled and fought for their lives for longer than needed because the government was lagging. In the green families story it’s brought to light that a man was telling officials where his family was and it was ignored and weeks went by anes. The government officials that did go into the tormented areas they were still not found because they were in poorer community did not help anyone they just took pictures of the disaster going on and left.

The government response to Hurricane Katrina should have been to help the people as soon as they saw the consequences after the Hurricane. In the rooftop photo it had African American people who looked poor standing on a roof with American flags basically begging for help. But helicopters were just flying over them taking pictures of the people in need instead of actually sending people down to help them. Before the hurricane when they were telling people to leave they should have went to poor communities and helped them get out instead of just leaving them there to suffer.

Instead of flying over and taking pictures of the catastrophe, the government should’ve been sending rescue teams to help the Katrina victims. The government should’ve also provided food, shelter, and aid before the hurricane hit in order to decrease the effect of the damage on the citizens. By doing this the government would be protecting its citizens instead of letting them die off in a natural disaster.

For example, “The commander-in-chief just flew by / Did he stop? No, he had a couple seats” (Minority Report, lines 29-30). President George Bush flew over Katrina victims and didn’t stop to reassure them that things would be okay, nor did he help them by giving them the supplies they needed to survive.

The government did not respond that well to hurricane katrina, they could have done a lot more. To me the government should have started by having everyone evacuate and the people who could not evacuate have them be taken out the city so no one would be harmed or injured. Next after the storm was finished they should rebuild homes and clean the city and for anyone who just so happened to be harmed or injured instantly taken to medical care. The government could have done way better in my eyes.

The response should have been to get the women and children out of the city first. Then the men or at least a plan set in place to help these victims. There should have been food or something some way to make sure the people survived.

The government should have responded to the hurricane by actually being there for the people and providing the help that was actually needed i feel they were looked over because it was majority African American people who were in the natural disaster. They should have provided evacuation for the people food and water shelter. There were so many things that could have been done to help our fellow Americans but as usual we had been let down.
