Mango Street 3

You will write a response to “Cathy Queen of Cats” or “Our Good Day.”  It must look like this to start:

In Sandra Cisneros’ House on Mango Street, the purpose of the vignette, (you choose) “Cathy Queen of Cats” is to show ___________________________.   (Now explain how you know.)  Use evidence from the text.

Example:

In Sandra Cisneros’ House on Mango Street, the purpose of the vignette “Cathy Queen of Cats” is to show how some members of society, who aren’t so special themselves, judge others based on race and class.  Cathy, the cat lady, lives in a house full of cats and thinks she’s better than everyone else in the neighborhood, especially the new “bad” people moving in.  She isn’t able to keep friends because she’s so judgmental.  And she uses a reference to a distant relative in France to make her feel better than other people because she has nothing else to make her feel good about herself.  (add as much as you like!)

In Sandra Cisneros. House on Mangoo Street the purpose of the vignette “Our Good Day” is that you have to be good, kind, and help other people when you have the chance, so they can be the same for you. Thats what Esperanza did when she found a girl who was asking for five dollars so could buy a bicycle from a kid named Tito. It means that you have to share what you have with the other; so you would have new friends, and because Esperanza did not have any friend she decided to give the five years old girl the money. ” Wait a minute, I say, and run inside to get the five dollars”. You also do not need to judge other people just because of how they look or that you can just judge them because of what they did, but you have to judge them after you get to know them. otherwise you will not have friend if you listen to other people’s opinion.

In Sandra Cisneros’ House on Mango Street, the purpose of the vignette, “Cathy Queen of Cats” is essentially showcasing the attitudes towards the Latinos moving into the community and being the scapegoat for the deterioration of the neighborhood. “Then as if she forgot I just moved in, she says the neighborhood is getting bad.” Cathy really places herself on a delusional high horse by stating immediately that she allegedly derives from this royal family and telling the narrator who she should and should not be friends with, also degrading the other kids in the community saying they smell like brooms, ect. when the reality was that Cathy was no better herself. The authors description of Cathy makes me envision a heavy set caucasian lady with a messy house and an obscene amount of kats running around. She basically doesn’t have a leg to stand on in terms of the racist undertones she was giving out towards the deterioration of the community and the other kids.

In Sandra Cisneros’ House on Mango Street, the purpose of the vignette, Cathy Queen of Cats is to show Cathy thinks highly of herself with Esperanza. When Esperanza moved in her new place she is unaware of the neighborhood. Cathy tells her what she knows by living in the community “Benny and Blanca own the corner. She tries to alert Esperanza about the neighborhood. Cathy finds affects in the neighborhood and feels much more superior than everyone else in the town.“I am the great great grand cousin of the queen of France.”(12) Proofs that she is trying to brag from where she is from and also that even though she is part of the “royal family” and doesn’t consider herself as an immigrant. Esperanza didn’t care of Cathy, she made friends Lucy and Rachel she gave the five dollar to have their friendship and also a bike to have fun. Cathy was a queen of cats, because she was to superficial to have friends.

In Sandra Cisneros’ House on Mango Street, the purpose of the vignette, Cathy Queen of Cats is to show how Cathy views Esperanza and the current state of the neighborhood that she lives in and how she presents herself to new people. When Esperanza meets Cathy for the first time Cathy refers to herself as the ” Great, great grand cousin of the queen of France”(pg12), Cathy tries to boost her image and credibility to Esperanza, basically trying to make herself seem bigger than she really is. The line ” Then as if she forgot I just moved in, she says the neighborhood is getting bad”(pg13) shows that Cathy does not like the fact that Esperanza and her family moved into the neighborhood.

In Sandra Cisneros’ House on Mango Street, the purpose of the vignette, “Cathy Queen of Cats” is to show that Cathy is very egotistic. She starts off with, “I am the great great grand cousin of the queen of France” (12). With that being said she wants to make herself feel good and also allow others to look up to her when really she is this lonely lady that lived on Mango Street for many years and likes to be in everyone else business. Cathy expected Esperanza to be her only friend and was not allowed to speak to the two little girls, Lucy and Rachel. “Two girls raggedy as rats live across the street. You don’t want to know them.” (12). She likes to talk about people and comes off as the “know-it-all”.

In Sandra Cisneros’ House on Mango Street, the purpose of the vignette, “Cathy Queen of Cats” is to show the big change going on in the city and Cathy’s personal experience going through it. Cathy is very judge mental towards the entire population and provides false information to Esperanza. Cathy’s own personal beliefs also reflect how she interprets the big change. “I am the great great grand cousin of the queen of France” (12).

In Sandra Cisneros’ House on Mango Street, the purpose of the vignette “Our Good Day” is to show that despite what Cathy thought was best for Esperanza, Esperanza ignored the tugging on her arm by Cathy and gave Lucy and Rachel the five dollars for the bike. It shows that Esperanza is brave and intuitive. The vignette also sets up a connection with Esperanza and the two new girls when they collectively put money together to get a bike and as soon as they get it they all ride it and have a great time. It also gave a sense of optimism, because Esperanza has found not just one friend but two friends and real people like her.

In Sandra Cisneros’ House on Mango Street, the purpose of the vignette, “Our good day” is to show the reader than no matter where you come from or how you’re raised you can still make a negative situation positive. “They are wearing shiny Sunday shoes without sock.” Esperanza sees that they are still people like her and yes they may not have the fancy clothes and shoes but they make the best of what they have, she recognizes that an likes them for that. Even though she was told not to get involved with Lucy and Rachel she get involved by going half on a bike so they can all have fun even though its just one but they all can enjoy it.

Two girls raggedy as rat live across the street, You don’t want to know them.” (12) she is explaining Esperanza of a local corner store to not trust them. This quote shows Cathy feels greatly of herself and needs to tell her she knows more in the community than she does. Cathy thinks Esperanza is a peasant and looks down upon moving in the neighborhood “You want a friend…I’ll be your friend. But only till next Tuesday. That’s when we move away. Got to. Then as if she forgot I just moved in, she says the neighbor is getting bad.”(13) Cathy tells Esperanza she will become her friend when she moves. This quote shows Cathy think Esperanza is worth nothing to her, when said she will become her friend when she is moving of her place. She thinks Esperanza is a cancer for mentioning the neighborhood is getting bad and it is a coincidence she has moved in.

In Sandra’s Cisneros House on Mango Street the purpose of the vignette “Cathy Queen of Cats” is to prove that Cathy is a woman who is almost a busy body in the town. Cathy is a person who lives with cats and doesn’t mind her business. She tries to alert Esperanza about the neighborhood. Cathy finds affects in the neighborhood and feels much more superior than everyone else in the town. “I am the great great grand cousin of the queen of France.”(12) Proofs that she is trying to brag from where she is from and also that even though she is part of the “royal family” and doesn’t consider herself as an immigrant. She doesn’t really say she is but in conclusion from what she had mentioned before in the vignette it seemed that someone in her family was an immigrant of maybe herself is one.

According to “Cathy Queen of Cats”, I believe this vignette is to show how lonely Cathy is. She does not have any friends but only many cats, She is desire to have some friends but she only can observe other’s actions. Esperanza is a new friends for her but last few days. (“next door to Joe the baby-grabber. Keep away from him, she says. He is full of danger. Benny and Blanca own the corner store. They’re okay except don’t lean on the candy counter. Two girls raggedy as rats live across the street. You don’t want to know them. Edna is the lady who owns the building next to you. She used to own a building big as a whale, but her brother sold it.”)
On another hand, I think having a life such as Cathy’s is a kind of fear for Esperanza, as a new immigrant in Mango Street, she does not want to be lonely as well as Cathy.

In Sandra Cisneros ‘ House on Mango Street, the purpose of the vignette “Our Good Days” is to show no matter what you do , you will never change the innocence of a kid. Some people in society judge others based on class level . Cathy was influencing Esperanza to make her think, that she can’t have friends or trust no body on her new neighborhood . So what she did, she was telling her how bad the kids were there. Their clothes were crooked and old but, just because Esperanza was an innocent girl who was taunted by the schoolmates on the past did care and saw the opposite of Cathy . Esperanza didn’t care of Cathy, she made friends Lucy and Rachel she gave the five dollar to have their friendship and also a bike to have fun. Cathy was a queen of cats, because she was to superficial to have friends. Hopefully Esperanza didn’t listen to her, finally she start to have friends based on what she thought their were not on how their were dressed .
