a.) To me Rios term seems like he is talking about natural value, and about the labor cost for employees. Also just the world organic makes me think about just fresh and non toxic.
b.) Resistance identities are those identities made by populations in responds to being healed down aka (oppressed). This is useful to the boys in the study because the longer they feel oppressed and give up it will get harder for them and hinder there ability to show who the really are and not bey criminalized for what there race.
c.) The saying going dumb means to just act really crazy and to show off in a negative way. For example like the side shows that be happening on freeways, for one they are really dangerous and people can get hurt, these people who are doing theses side shows are just trying to show that they are tough and this is there way of having fun. Also society see them as destructive and immature.
d.) Ronny think he has done well in his interview because he looked great felt good and had charisma but was nervous because this was something he wasn’t use to.But he answered all her questions and at the end he didn’t get a job. Then Ronny went on a couple of more jobs interviews and it didn’t work out so well so he went on another route. Ronny had to be creative. Ronny didn’t want to change who he was. Ronny repose was to being oppressed.

some forms of organic currency are selling drug are guns because form some of them its the only job they can get. the type of clothing they wear because if they where the wongs types of clothes they will shot.

Resistance identity means a groups who feels marginalized and devalued by current social conditions. It’s useful in studying the boys because it helps you understand there mind set, an example why are they in a gang because they feel protected and powerful and that is a huge deal for the boy because 90% of them have never had any type of control and this is the only way they can. That’s why gangs are formed in the first place.

When someone says going dumb they mean the person is acting stupid are getting hella hyped up. People tend to start going dumb at party’s or big events, usually to show off are to draw attention to them self. When I was at a my friends eighteenth birthday party people started drinking and going dumb to the music.

Ronny thought he did well in the interview because he did everything Victor Rios told him to, he even dressed the part. He also did not shake the white ladys hand he thought she would think he was trying to steal from her. I think Ronny did do well in the interview and the reason he did not get hired was because he is black. one reason I say that is the way Victor described how the lady giving the interview reacted to first meeting Ronny then the white man, the white man she offered her hand and seam interested in what he had to say.

    Questions

    a. Define Rios’ term, “organic capital.”
Organic Capital: A way for young people to be able to express themselves in a certain manner that allows them to block things out.
    b. What is meant by a “resistance identity?” How is it useful to the boys in the study?
To not fully show something. This is useful to the boys because they can hide things easier.
    b. What sense does “going dumb” make to anyone looking from the outside in? Can you think of other real examples where this sort of phenomena occurs?

On the outside looking in towards “going dumb” looks foolish because it’s getting others to think begins stupid is okay while being intelligent is wrongful. It makes them look ignorant to because it is getting others to believe they are less intelligent.
    d. Why did Ronny think he had done well in his interview?
Growing up, Ronny always had a hard time getting along with White Woman because they found him a threat or were intimidated by him. They would do things like move there purse aside when we would come by or be around them. So now, Ronny feels like White Woman just don’t like him and grew up thinking that he should never touch a White Woman’s hand. The way these woman made him feel put a huge effect on Ronny’s self-esteem. He felt like he wouldn’t have gotten the job because the manager of a store is a White Woman. He let his assumption ruin the job opportunity. He felt like discourage by the racist manager because he hadn’t received a handshake from her like the White Male had. Ultimately, effected Ronny’s chance of getting this job.

a.Rios describes organic capital as a way to do right and legal decisions and activities, for example, having an acceptable job, going to school, and act lawful.

    b. For this young boys using the identity resistance has been helpful for their daily life. They are frequently excluded from the mainstream, in which they are often labeled as deviant criminalize. Consequently, Boys make the decisions to use the only resource they have in hand, which is doing criminalize activity in order to survive in the environment that have categorize them as rebellious boys.

    c. Analyzing ‘’Goin dumb’’ from outside that system is consider an insane way to act in society, and for outsiders it is increasingly dangerous for one’s life and the rest of the people. From the outside point of view, this savage type of way of action makes them being criminalized and labeled as hazardous people to society. One example for this pelirious example is the sideshows that constantly happens in East Oakland, thus sides shows are now considered as cultural and acceptable for many people in society the system outside from that environment believes that those actions are unacceptable and extremely dangerous for society.

d.Rony thought that it was okay to not shake a white woman’s hand because he had previously experienced the way his white teachers would consider him as menace to them. Also, he thought that it was the way it was supposed to be because he was black and the interviewer was white, therefore the way he thought about that situation were the results of the outside people treatment; and, includes the racism, criminalization, and the verbally and physically abuse that they received from members of different institutions .

    a) “organic capitals” the boys are being held in a way from being successful, Rios writes that it can be to prevent violence, or incarceration. the boys use it as a resilience strategy that helps them get threw neglect and exclusionary experiences.
    b) By Rios writing “resistance identity” he is trying to demonstrate that the boys don’t fit in society and these identities are created by “subordinated populations” is to make them feel excluded. They are developing skills that will help them survive in situations where they have been left out, as an example in economical system; poor people tend to steal to be able to survive.
    c) “going dumb” this is a way to demonstrate yourself it can be in different ways like music just dancing and not carrying. To some looking from the outside it can be seen as ignorance and irrational, but its just away of fitting in with your social group. i
    d) Ronny thought his interview went well because was not scared he was being funny and was paying attention, his friend said that the interviewer had seem to like him. Ronny was also dressed professional. Ronny felt like he wasn’t good enough so because he wouldn’t get hired so he had to find a way to survive and he went to find another alternative.

    a. Define Rios’ term, “organic capital.” The organic composition of capital (OCC) is a concept created by Karl Marx in his critique of political economy and used in Marxian economics as a theoretical alternative to neo-classical concepts of factors of production, production functions, capital productivity and capital-output ratios. That is the concept, but in this chapter mean renovation and it means opportunity to someone who is starting on the professional business world and it has the opportunity to do something different. It means a lot to this person because he come from a different world and so that is a huge chance in his live. In this chapter we can see that everything is possible, that event people with a bad pass can change and do something different with his life. But to be honest to me organic capital is something different something new something that is not in that street that a lot of those young people grow up to be, organic capital what a funny way to say that this what you suppose to do and what you need to do in order to success but i love it because its different in this boy life, now he is growing up no more fights or hungry or drugs or alcohols now he actually can see the sun coming up for him. this world that you can find love, make a family and have kids. this world that start for a simple job but give that energy to help others that are coming from where are you coming from.

    b. What is meant by a “resistance identity?” How is it useful to the boys in the study? . it is really useful because now they can do everything from fresh starts i meant lets be honest people who has been in prison, gang, gay and others has zero possibility, i mean just to be Black or Latino is a lot of discrimination imagine if people know that the person who is working or sever for you are a ex-criminal or ex-gang members so yes this is really helpful for everyone who is trying to be different.

    c. What sense does “going dumb” make to anyone looking from the outside in? Can you think of other real examples where this sort of phenomena occurs? it mean do stupid things like the way that they use their pants baggie under their ass just because they think its cute or cool. BUT IT IS REALLY STUPID AND ITS DUMB. Then we have the people with the comb in their hair, and they say is okay because it looks okay and they even want to use to go work. Communication, that is just one of the bad things that we have and we think its cool write or even talk with bad grammatical say thing that don’t even have any sense like my hair is on FLEEK now it has a meaning and everyone knows what it mean but think about it all start from our generation.

Why did Ronny think he had done well in his interview? Because he done a professional interview he uses his charisma, and he keep the professional distance with lady that was doing his interview.

    a. Define Rios’ term, “organic capital.”
Organic capital is a description of how Black and Latino boys are used in the mainstream that allows them to persist and survive through negative difficulties with positive opinions and attitudes. The negative difficulties includes labeling, criminalized, misunderstood, and more.
    b. What is meant by a “resistance identity?” How is it useful to the boys in the study?
Resistance identity is the response from the subordinated populations to oppression. It is useful to the boys in the study because it can identify the social status and the dissatisfaction from the boys to the society. The reason why this identity is very useful to the boys in the study because they are “clearly aware of recognized, and had an analysis of the system that criminalized them” (Pg. 103). From what are being seen and heard from the community the boy’s lives in, it affected their recognition of the system of “Black and White”. Majority of the time, Whites are the one who receives more benefits and fairness than Blacks. If the Black did something wrong, harsh punishment would be put on them. On the other hand, Whites would not receive as harsh punishment as they would. As a result of knowing the differences of the system, the boys recognize the system of Black and White where the boys are well aware of their responses to the community that they are in.
    c. What sense does “going dumb” make to anyone looking from the outside in? Can you think of other real examples where this sort of phenomena occurs?
The meaning of “going dumb” is a way of being themselves for the Blacks. Something that Blacks do to be themselves by engage in crimes such as stealing, selling drugs, killing, and etcetera. Unlike other races, doing these crimes are the only way for the Blacks to survive in this society. However, on the other hand, that is not what the other races thinks. Based on all the illegal activities that are done by Blacks, others believe they are dumb. Instead of having the same thinking as the Blacks, others believe the Blacks are putting themselves in crime and danger. Others believe Blacks had never think about what would be the consequences after what Blacks done. From the book, punished; Policing the Lives of Blacks and Latinos Boys by Victory M. Rios, he suggested that the society we live in had misinterpreted the Blacks and Latinos boys. Based on what we belief had been marked an end point for the Blacks and Latinos boys. For example, Tyrell end up selling drugs in school because his family is not able to afford living. For those who doesn’t know Tyrell well believe he is doing it for fun. However, in the reality, Tyrell is selling drugs in order for him to survive in this society.
    d. Why did Ronny think he had done well in his interview?
Ronny thinks he had done well in his interview because he done everything that was told by Rios and have a strong belief he is going to get this job. Ronny also practiced interview questions that are commonly used during interview, and dressed up professionally.

    a. Define Rios’ term, “organic capital.”
Organic capital is a type of strategy that the Black and Latino youth developed to help them succeed in mainstream. Most of the time, organic capital is interpreted differently by other people as of irrational and bad behavior to be mainstream. The youth also uses this as a way to help them resist and survive the oppressing system that is placed upon them.
    b. What is meant by a “resistance identity?” How is it useful to the boys in the study?
Resistance Identity is something that is developed in subordinate places for resisting against oppression. Sociologist Manuel Castells stated that resistance identities operated by “excluding the excluder.” This suggests that the system is restricting them from getting proper education and other programs that they need to survive in society. Often Whites gets more of these privileges because they believe that all Black and Latino youth are bad based on a number of Black and Latino are seen. Also resistance identities causes them to do crimes such as stealing. This is useful to them because knowing that they are being criminalized they try to resist the system that is oppressing them to become free. By resisting they often do not listen to rules, do crimes, and everything else to survive with the resources that they only have with them.
    c. What sense does “going dumb” make to anyone looking from the outside in? Can you think of other real examples where this sort of phenomena occurs?
“Going dumb” from an outside perspective is pretty dumb because in a White’s positions they would not do that. They think it is bad and it is going against many norms based on what the society believes is considered normal. On the other hand, people who are in the position of “going dumb” it is a smart way because it helps them survive in the society and system that oppresses them. The Black and Latino youth also resist because it is their way of being free. The system always oppresses them and restricts them from succeeding. Many of the Black and Latino youth in the book are often seen differently from an outside perspective. From outside perspective they interpret the Black and Latino behavior as deviant and irrational because their behavior is not normal. Many institutions oppresses them based on their behavior and how they act. Black and Latino youth they feel like they should resist because they want to be free like everyone else.
    d. Why did Ronny think he had done well in his interview?
Ronny thinks that he had done well in his interview because he did everything the way Rios told him to. Which means that Ronny answered the questions and presented himself as the way he practiced. This also includes how he dressed up and presented to the manager that he is professional.

    a. Define Rios’ term, “organic capital.”
Creative social and cultural capital that the boys developed in response to being prevented from acquiring capital to succeed in mainstream organizations. Basically it is what these boys do in response of not being able to find a job, or work.
    b. What is meant by a “resistance identity?” How is it useful to the boys in the study?
Resistance identity are those identities created by subordinated populations in response to abuse or injustice. This is useful for the boys in the study because they use it to survive in such a way of committing crimes. committing crimes are not good but that is what these boys have to do in order to live. This is only good for boys, but it’s bad for everyone else.
    c. What sense does “going dumb” make to anyone looking from the outside in? Can you think of other real examples where this sort of phenomena occurs?
“Going dumb” makes no sense to anyone from the outside looking in. They probably think it means to literally, go stupid or brain dead. What it really means is being crazy, or as we say it hyphy. Also, when someone just going crazy to music is what we call that “going dumb”. The people on the outside think that their actions are absurd and they look stupid. “going dumb” is also people acting out swinging cars, selling drugs, running the streets etc. One example of Darius and his family going dumb is when he saw this boy he wanted to fight. He wanted to fight him one on one without his family’s help, but instead his family “went dumb” and decided to jump in.

    d. Why did Ronny think he had done well in his interview?
Ronny thought he did well in the interview because he had done everything that Rios prepared him for, also he thought his charisma helped him in drawing her toward hiring him. He dressed nice in a white button up shirt and even wore some non-baggy khaki pants. He also had practiced mock questions for an interview and had found out just how to approach this interview.

    a. Define Rios’ term, “organic capital.”
Organic capital in Rios’ term means the people that grew up in their neighborhood develops their own social skills and cultural capital. This eventually leads to unsuccessful in mainstream institution. For example, the boys wears Nikes to their job interview, but normally people would wear formally. In their world, it is consider swag or cool because of how other people from their neighborhood looks at them.

    b. What is meant by a “resistance identity?” How is it useful to the boys in the study?
Resistance identity are those identities created by lower class populations in response to oppression. It is useful to the boys in the study because they have been mistreated from the beginning of their lives; getting kicked out of school, harassed by polices, discriminated by people, etc. Whenever a person gets angry, they usually want to hit or destroy something. It would be normal for the boys to resist after being mistreated by the society.

    c. What sense does “going dumb” make to anyone looking from the outside in? Can you think of other real examples where this sort of phenomena occurs?
From the outside, people would judge how a person acts. People that goes dumb are usually trying to fit in to the culture of where they are from. But on the inside, that person could be genius for acting dumbing in front of everyone. For example, smartest kids in class usually go dumb to fit in and to avoid being called a nerd or a try-hard.

    d. Why did Ronny think he had done well in his interview?
Ronny thinks he done well in his interview because he practice really hard on the mock interviews with Rios. He also dressed professionally which subordinated neighborhood don’t usually wear, and he was confident about his charming looks. I feel like he’s too cocky for his first profession dressed interview. Even though he didn’t get hired for the first few interview, he could have kept going until he gets hired.

    a. Define Rios’ term, “organic capital.”

“…the creative social and cultural capital that the boys developed in response to being prevented from acquiring capital to succeed in mainstream institutions…” Meaning that their social circle creates their idea of what mainstream people are looking for when you approach them. For example, the boys are taught that they are young and going into a store in a group that they are going to steal something and that they are criminals. So they have to act a certain way when in liquor stores and keep the store items in visible sight so they won’t be harassed.

    b. What is meant by a “resistance identity?” How is it useful to the boys in the study?
Resistance identity are those identities created by subordinated populations in response to oppression. The boys use this as a way of knowing how to be “professional” or “blend in” with others in a world where they are being judged all the time. For example, Ronny going on an interview and he wears a button up and slacks but Nike Air Force Ones. His response was “Because professionals wear them,” I feel like these boys know what they need to do to obey by society but they choose not because of how they will be looked at by their fellow peers.

    c. What sense does “going dumb” make to anyone looking from the outside in? Can you think of other real examples where this sort of phenomena occurs?
People outside looking in think that “going dumb” is an excuse for people to get attention but they are attracting the wrong attention, people will think that it makes no sense and label them as “ignorant” or other negative words. There are different types of “going dumb,” for example, a person going off on another person out of anger and they are saying outrageous things, hanging out of a car in a sideshow dancing, or just dancing at a club.

    d. Why did Ronny think he had done well in his interview?
Ronny thought that he had done well in his interview because he had practiced with Victor and he helped him with interview questions. Ronny also thought that his charisma ways helped me along the way. I think his thought that if he stayed out of white women way and gave them their space they wouldn’t think he was dangerous or a threat. Like instead of shaking her hand he just said thank you and left because him being a young black male white people think they are all the same.

Organic Capital is a creative response that the boys that took part in is study, developed in the public eye cause of blocked opportunity and criminalization by the system.
In this study by Rios, the boys developed a resistance identity’s to boost their self-Est steam because they feel marginalized and devalued by the system at hand. Pretty much it’s an alter ego for the boys in this study by Rios. These boys may have been used to enjoy uncontested power or respect but now feel they are losing ground.
Going Dumb is a slang word for Going Crazy or Hyphy that has started here in the west coast. To someone looking in from the outside, they might think the person going “hyphy” is rather crazy, on drugs, or just mess up in the head.
During Ronny’s interview, he did everything that Rios had told him to do like smile, and look like you want the job. Ronny knew in the back of his head that something was amidst. Ronny walked out at the end of the interview without shaking the manager’s hand, or saying thank you for the interview. Ronny felt like the manager wasn’t giving him the time of day (by the way the manager is a white woman). Ronny felt that the manager kept her distance from Ronny because how society thinks of young men of color. After Ronny left the interview, Rios notice that the manager had another interview but this time it was with a white male. The managers both greeted him and shock his hand two things that she didn’t do for Ronny.

    1.Define Rios’ term, “organic capital.”
Rios says that the young people “organic capital” as a resilience strategy which
means a way to survive poverty, prevent violence, and preventing incarceration.
    2. What is meant by a “resistance identity?” How is it useful to the boys in the study?
Resistance Identity means that if someone doesn’t “fit” into a society’s standards, they would find a way to survive. Rios uses the example of living in a place where education and employment opportunities aren’t available to certain groups of people which causes them to respond in a way that they can get the things they need.
    3. What sense does “going dumb” make to anyone looking from the outside in? Can you think of other real examples where this sort of phenomena occurs?
I think that they would assume to meant actually going dumb which doesn’t really make sense but that’s what I would think. In middle school and high school, I remember everyone used to say “go dumb” that would mean “go crazy.” It’s basically another way of saying “turn up.” It’s kind of a phrase created to get people pumped up.
    4. Why did Ronny think he had done well in his interview?
Ronny was confident during the interview and felt like he said the right things. But since he thought it was more respectful to not shake the manager’s hand after, it lead to him not getting a job. He was taught that it was more polite to not shake a white woman’s hand because they would assume something different. He didn’t realize that it was actually a respectful gesture in the workplace.

    b) “Resistance Identity” meant how people do not accept who they are and refuse there identity. The boys study this to help them understand who they are.
    c) The words “Going Dumb” to someone on the outside could mean that the person lose themselves in the moment. When people are in high stress situations and let there body take control.
    d) He thought he did good in his interview because he was charismatic and he payed attention to the manger he said to his friend that she seemed to like him and he tried to be respectful to the manager and keep his distance because of his color.
