In his essay, “What Are Homosexuals For?” Andrew Sullivan illustrates exactly how homosexuals are treated and what they have to suffer through emotionally. First, he describes the university figure. Sullivan states that he “regained himself before he lost himself forever.” The author is the figure’s new identity. His new identity was the one that he had been hiding from society. The one he was afraid to reveal, but once he did the burden was removed and he was able to live life peacefully. Next, Sullivan describes himself. He explains that being “heterosexual” implied certain rights and equality. He too had to hide from himself and society, almost feeling ad if he admitted that if he was gay then he wouldn’t be good enough. He associates being gay with being of lesser equivalence. Lastly, Sullivan describes the fact that homosexuals cannot be biological mothers or fathers together. He describes being homosexual, one is depribed of that joy or that fulfilling-ness that comes after hsving a child with your significant other. Overall, homosexuals are suffering emotionally.
