In the short satirical essay “Modest Proposal”, Johnathan Swift is proposing a solution for poor children in Ireland. That families should just fatten up,and ear their poor children. Of course he was being sarcastic, because at the end of the essay he revealed his main point. That the rich can help out the horrible situation the poor children in Ireland is in.

Swift’s method in his “Modest Proposal” is to propose an illogical and outrageous solution to the country’s problem to bring attention to the obvious and possible solution to their problem. There is no need to go to extremes to put food on the table and to prevent thousands of death all that is needed is contribution from people such as the landowners.

    2) The real point that Jonathan Swift is arguing in the essay is how both rich and poor people look at eachother, which is as bad people. In the essay Swift explains how kids should be fattened up and eaten so they wont have to suffer later on because they wont have anything thing to eat. Swift also says that poor people look for people to buy their kids off them and eat them just to have acouple of dollars for themselves. I think that that is disgusting and sick for someone to even think of that.

    2. In ” A Modest Proposal” by Jonathan Swift approaches his key issue, the deaths of many infants in Ireland in 1729, in a satiric way arguing for a better life for the infants. Although his argument seems to be that the young infants should be feed and nurtured to be used as food later in their lives; Swift’s actual argument is that the rich should help the poor instead of “devouring the parents.” I can conclude that his true argument is the opposite of the argument that seems to be clear because of Swift’s use of sarcasm. Swift’s true position is enlightened by the quote “…As they have already devoured most of the parents, seem to have the best title to children.” (50 Essays pg 296) All in all, although Swift seems to be arguing for the children to be used as food once they are “plump” enough, his true argument calls for action against the food shortage the infants and their parents have to face.

In Jonathan Swift’s essay “A Modest Proposal”, I believe that the real point he is arguing is that ultimitley children and their health and nourishment are important. The author sees that not all children have their life easy in a healthy matter, because of the fact that they’re dying due to conditions. This shows his intentions, character, and what he wants to eventually see being done. Differences that should, and hopefully are made.

2.) In “The Modest Proposal” by Jonathan Swift, he uses figurative language in his argument to describe his point of view about what Ireland should do to solve the hunger problem. When he refers to fattening the children up, he means to give them resources so they can overcome their hunger and then take advantage of them since they were helpless little children.

What kind of figurative language does he use specifically? What about his tone? Does that weigh heavier than his use of his figurative language–or even better–what effect does his figurative language have on the tone and how does that tie in with his purpose?

In the essay, “A Modest Proposal”, Swift’s real point that he is arguing is that the rich or the whole country should be helped by the public good in advancing trade, infants, relieving the poor, and giving some pleasure to the rich. (Swift 401) So the story of having kids as livestock is just a way to kind of scare the public because that is what they may resort too since the people cannot pay rent and provide for their children that will later die of starvation. So in all the rich become richer and the poor become poorer, unless there is some help from the politicians or government and the moral good of the people.

    2. In the essay, “A Modest Proposal”, a prolific poet, satirist, and pamphleteer Johnathan Swift presents a proposal that will help cease the starvation of the Irish. Swift suggested the Irish result to cannibalism in order to survive or that parents should feed their malnourished children until they get plump and sell to the rich for money instead of making them suffer a poor life. Cannibalism will definitely help out by decreasing population size, decreasing the numbers of beggars on the street, and decreasing the number of malnourished children. But the apparent point Swift is trying to fabricate is he was being sarcastic the whole time just to get people’s attention. He wants them to realize that they need to do something in order to not go through another crop failure.

In “Modest Proposal” by Jonathan Swift, Swift uses satire to make a point. He suggests that, to solve to hunger problem in Ireland, the Irish should fatten up the babies and eat them. Clearly he is over exaggerating and eating babies are not the correct solution. By suggesting such an extreme solution, Swift illustrates the severity of the problem. The Irish, as a people, should attack the hunger issue vehemently.

In The Modest Proposal, satirist Jonathan Swift provides a solution to the poor children that are suffering because of the crop failure in Ireland. He suggests that since the wealthy landowners can not afford to raise children and do not care about the poor families the English might as well feed them until they’re fat and then eat them. Swift believes that if the poor Irish kids are going to die anyways, the rich who only do things for their best interest should just eat them since it would be more beneficial than just letting them die of starvation. This would also ensure that there would be no problems of overpopulation. Another positive would be that there wouldn’t be as much unemployment.

    2. In the essay “A Modest Proposal” by Jonathan Swift, Swift uses satirist behavior when he comes up with the solution to eat the children Ireland. During this time period Ireland as a whole is starving, and there is a lot of poor people and beggars on the streets. No one is helping the poor people. Swift is directing his argument toward the rich people and the English landowners. His proposal to solve this problem is to sell the children for money so people could eat them, and because they are a burden to their poor starving parents. By using this extreme proposal he is trying to get the landowners to pay attention and realize how badly the people are suffering. They are suffering so bad that they would sell their own kids just so they could get money. By writing “A Modest Proposal”, Swift hopes to reach out to the people in power to do something to help.

In Jonathan Swift’s “A Modest Proposal,” he proposes an idea of how bad the poverty is in Ireland, and how it recieves no help from the greater power above (England). Swift mentions a statement that it would be better to fatten up these poor children in poverty and to sell them off to rich landowners as nutrition, than for them to continue the lives they are living. This suggests that the situation these people of poverty is very serious, and he uses this method to grasp the attention of the people in power to take action and nourish these people. Swift believes that the difference between the rich and the poor are very dramatic, and something should be done to change this and create equality to balance out this society so they may both have fair chances at a well privileged healthy life.

In “Modest Proposal, “by Johnathan Swift, he clearly argues how even though it seems like a bad thing to do, selling babies, he has the “best intentions” for his country, his home. Many children don’t have the right amount of food to live and it can be difficult for the parents to support the children so the parents just sell them. Swift also points out that too many children are dying and many of us viewers are assuming that there will be a positive outcome, but really 120,00 babies are dying for the sake of people. They are replacing them as food. He states that way to solve the country’s problem you must eat each other, canabolism.
